Lagos nightlife — it doesn't start until midnight

Afrobeats megaclubs, rooftop cocktail bars, Fela's Shrine, beach parties until sunrise — Lagos has the most electric nightlife in Africa. Here's everything you need to know.

Know before you go

The unwritten rules of Lagos nightlife

Nothing starts before midnight

Arrive at a club at 11pm and it's empty. Peak is 2-4am. Plan accordingly.

Dress code is serious

Nigerians dress UP. Smart casual minimum. No flip-flops, no shorts, no plain tees.

Bottles > individual drinks

In clubs, buying a bottle to share is more cost-effective and gets you table service.

Uber/Bolt only — never walk

Always use ride apps between venues. Share your trip with someone. Never take random taxis.

Keep your phone hidden

Phone snatching happens outside clubs. Don't use your phone while waiting for Uber in the street.

VPN for posting

X/Twitter is blocked. You'll want to post your Lagos nights — have your VPN ready.

Atican Beach, Ilashe — various beach clubs along the Lekki coast host massive day-to-night parties during December. Follow @dettylagos on Instagram for schedules.

Stay safe

Nightlife safety essentials

Always Uber/Bolt between venues. Share your trip with a friend. Never walk between clubs, even short distances.

Keep phone in your pocket near club entrances. Phone snatching is the #1 risk. Don't wave it around for photos outside.

Stick to VI, Lekki, and Ikoyi for nightlife. These areas have security presence. Avoid unfamiliar areas at night.

Don't flash cash or expensive jewelry. Pay by card where possible. Keep Naira cash in a front pocket, not a wallet.

Turn on your VPN before connecting to any club or bar WiFi. Protect your banking apps.
