Where to stay

Hotels & accommodation near Afro Nation

Portimão is a mid-size Algarve town, not huge, so accommodation books out fast during Afro Nation. Here's what to know:

Praia da Rocha (walking distance)

Best location

Right next to the festival. Most expensive but you walk home. Book immediately, this area sells out months early.

€120-300/night

Portimão centre (10 min taxi)

Best value

Best value. Hotels and Airbnbs at half the beach price. Quick €5-8 taxi to the festival. Restaurants and supermarkets nearby.

€60-150/night

Alvor or Carvoeiro (20 min drive)

Budget pick

Quieter beach towns nearby. Budget-friendly but you'll need a rental car or rely on taxis. Good for groups splitting costs.

€50-120/night

Praia da Rocha hotels are already 60%+ booked for Afro Nation weekend

If you want walking distance to the festival, book this week. Portimão centre is your best fallback, still good availability as of April 2026.

Real costs

How much does Afro Nation actually cost?

Let's be honest about the numbers. Afro Nation isn't a cheap weekend, but it doesn't have to be crazy expensive either. Here's a realistic breakdown for the full trip from the UK:

ExpenseBudgetMid-rangeLuxury
Festival ticket (3-day)€99€179€499
Flights (London return)£80£150£300
Accommodation (4 nights)€160€400€1,000+
Food & drinks (4 days)€80€200€500+
Transport (airport + local)€40€80€150
eSIM / data€5€10€10
Going out / extras€50€150€500+
Total estimate~£470~£1,050~£2,600+

The budget option assumes a hostel in Portimão centre, Ryanair flights booked early, and eating street food. Mid-range gets you a decent hotel in Portimão centre with restaurant meals. Luxury is Praia da Rocha beachfront, VIP tickets, and no spending limits.

£470

Minimum realistic budget for Afro Nation from the UK, flights, 4 nights, ticket, food, and transport

For more on Nigeria-specific budgeting, see our Nigeria trip cost breakdown. If you're combining Afro Nation with a Lagos trip later, plan for that separately.

Pack smart

eSIM, insurance & travel essentials

eSIM for Portugal

Don't pay roaming charges. Get a Portugal or Europe eSIM before you fly. 5GB is enough for 4 days of maps, Uber, and posting stories. Activate it on the plane.

Get Portugal eSIMFrom €3.50. Airalo

Travel insurance

Festival + beach + nightlife = things can happen. Medical costs in Portugal aren't cheap for non-EU visitors. Get coverage that includes phone theft, it's the #1 claim at festivals.

Get SafetyWingFrom $1.50/day

Money & cards

Portugal uses the Euro. Don't exchange cash at the airport. Use a travel card (Wise or Revolut) for the best exchange rate. Most places accept card — keep €50 cash for street vendors and small bars.

Weather

July in the Algarve = 30-35°C, full sun, no rain. Bring sunscreen (SPF 50, the beach has zero shade), a hat, and comfortable shoes. Nights are warm, around 22°C. You won't need a jacket.

Things to do around Portimão

Don't just do the festival. The Algarve has incredible beaches, boat trips to caves (Benagil Cave is a must), and some of the best seafood in Europe. Lagos (30 min away) has great bars and cliff beaches.

Make it a summer

The 2026 Afrobeats tour circuit

Afro Nation isn't the only Afrobeats event this summer. If you're coming from Nigeria or the diaspora, consider building a whole trip around the circuit:

Wizkid at Dreamland, Margate

June 27. UK

Afro Nation at Praia da Rocha

July 3-5. Portugal

Burna Boy at The National Bowl

July 31. Milton Keynes, UK

The triple-header play

Wizkid Margate (June 27) Afro Nation Portugal (July 3-5) Burna Boy Milton Keynes (July 31). All within 5 weeks. If you're UK-based, this is the most epic Afrobeats summer you can have. Use our flight guide to find the cheapest London-Faro-London combo.

Survival tips for Afro Nation

Buy tickets from official channels only

Scam tickets are rampant on Twitter and Instagram. Only buy from the official Afro Nation website or authorised resellers like Dice or Ticketmaster. If someone DMs you selling tickets at 'face value'. it's probably fake.

Book accommodation with free cancellation

Plans change. Book a refundable hotel now to lock in current prices, and you can cancel if you find something better. Booking.com has free cancellation on most properties.

Download offline maps of Portimão

Mobile signal at the festival is terrible. 50,000 people all trying to use data at once. Download Google Maps offline for Portimão before you arrive. Same for your taxi app.

Sunscreen is not optional

You're on a beach in July in southern Portugal. Even if you think you don't burn, you will. SPF 50, reapply every 2 hours. Aloe vera is your best friend at this festival.

Phone safety at the festival

The #1 theft at any festival is phones. Use a running belt or crossbody bag. Don't put your phone in your back pocket in the crowd. Insure it before you go.

Uber and Bolt work in Portimão

Taxis are expensive during Afro Nation (they know). Uber and Bolt are cheaper and more reliable. Pre-book your airport transfer and give yourself 30 min buffer for festival night surge pricing.

Nigerian passport holders: get your Schengen visa NOW

Processing takes 2-4 weeks and there's often a backlog before summer. Apply at the Portuguese embassy or VFS Global. You need: passport, bank statements, hotel booking (use a refundable one), and travel insurance proof.

Ready to go?

Book your Afro Nation trip now

Flight prices will only go up from here. Lock in accommodation with free cancellation. Get your eSIM sorted. Then all you need is the ticket and the vibes.
